"Do you tell your mother you’re working at a hospital so that she doesn’t worry about you?" Tom says. "She does. She thinks about you every night and cries. At least your fuck-up of a father tried to raise you, but you’ll never have a family. You’ll die alone, just like she feared. These two will leave you behind as soon as they can. They’ll forget about you, and you…"
He trails off, laughing.
"No one remembers you fondly," he says. "Not all of these people you’ve purported to help. Right now, Catherine Lange is on her way to an in-patient facility, and you were the one to put her there."
Rei catches my eyes for a second. I see him hesitating. I shake my head. Even if it’s true, we can’t focus on Trine right now, but there’s a part of me that worries about her.
If it wasn’t for us, she wouldn’t be in pain. And he might be lying—there’s no way for me to know—but it’s more likely that he’s telling the truth.
Demons lie, but truth is more powerful. It’s scarier. It’s more real. And this feels like the truth.
Rei knows we’ll deal with this later. At least, I hope he does. I turn back to my bible, slowly starting on the sacrament again.
Tom ignores me, his voice soft when he speaks, but still deep and distorted. "You’re everyone’s bad memory, Dr. Woods. That’s all you’re ever going to be."
I don’t have to meet Rei’s eyes to know that he believes him.
