She smiled, nodding. “Sadie sure found that out.”
“Well, that’s great news. You weren’t expected, you know. But when we found out we were having you…we knew it was right. And we were thrilled.”
Our server popped in to refill our coffees and we thanked her as she walked off.
“And I know this might be weird, but Iaman OB/GYN.”
“Dad!” she exclaimed with a laugh. “Don’t tell me you want me to let her know you’ve offered to, ah, poke around down there.”
I laughed with her. “That’s not what I mean. But I am something of an expert in these sorts of matters. Pregnancy’s a confusing time, and if you want to pass her my number so I can answer any questions she might have, that’d be fine with me.”
“She’s got her doctor situation lined up, I believe. But I’ll pass that along. I’m sure she’ll appreciate it.”
The waitress appeared again, this time with our food. Once the meals were in front of us, the conversation shifted to lighter matters, like our plans for kayaking and where we’d grab lunch after.
We finished up brunch and then climbed into our separate cars to head to the river. As I drove, all I could think about was how funny it was that Sadie and I had both done the same thing that night.
Of course, the unthinkable occurred to me – what ifI’dbeen the one who’d slept with her.
The more I considered that, however, the less likely it seemed. Sure, the woman I’d been with had worn a mask. Even so, there’s no way I would’ve gotten that close to someone I knew without recognizing them.
On top of that, the mystery woman being Sadie would mean that she’d slept with me knowing who I was, but not saying anything.
Then there was the matter of the tattoo. Not like I’d ever seen Sadie naked before, of course, but she’d been in short shorts enough times around me to where I would’ve remembered a tattoo like that.
I thought it over, compiling the evidence and determining that it was extremely unlikely that she was the mystery woman with whom I’d spent the night.
The matter now settled, I drove in peace. I even allowed myself a small chuckle at the notion that Sadie had been there the same time I had been, on the other side of the room getting swept off her feet by the future father of her child.
She’d need help, however. I hoped that Camilla would do as I asked, passing my information along.
What a small, small world, I thought with a wry smile, ready to continue my day and spend it with the most important woman in my life.
