I pick up the phone and search for his number. My finger hovers over the call button for a second. I push it and close my eyes, my heart beating harder with every ring.
“Hello?” he answers.
“Hi.”
There’s a moment of silence, I frown and look at the phone to see if I’m still connected or if I’ve lost him. “Rein?”
“Yeah, it’s me.”
“Are you okay?” He asks, his tone panicked. “Is the baby—”
“No, I’m fine, we’re both fine.” I assure him and hear him exhale; his tone immediately goes back to its usual smoky deep tone. Geez, I forgot how attractive his voice sounds over the phone. In real life too, obviously, but over the phone it just sounds deeper, and his Aussie accent turns into a drawl.
“Oh, shit, you had me worried there for a minute,” he discloses, “A call from you is the last thing I was expecting—not that I’m complaining, of course. You can call me any time, day or night.”
“Talon.”
“Yes?”
“I have an antenatal class tomorrow morning. I was supposed to go with my aunt, but I was wondering if you wanted to come instead?”
“Really?” comes his surprised response and I can just picture him sitting upright, his brows furrowed.
“Yes, I mean only if you want to, you don’t have to—”
“Of course, I’ll be there.” He quickly interjects. “Shall I pick you up in the morning?” he offers, and I almost say no but stop myself. The whole point of this is to spend some time together so we can talk.
“Sure. I’m sending you my location. The class starts at nine-fifteen. Don’t be late.” I share my location with him, and I hear him chuckle lowly.
“When have you known me to be late for anything?”
“Hm, you’ve got a point. I forgot what a stickler you were when it came to punctuality. You were always infuriatingly punctual.”
“Your time is no more valuable than mine, Miss Valdez.” He drawls just like he did back when he was my professor. I close my eyes, biting down on my lower lip when the deep undertone of his voice sends a balmy tremor right through me.
“Famous words to live by Professor.”
Talon sighs, “Can I admit something?”
“Sure.”
“I’ve truly missed hearing you call me that.”
I frown, “I thought you hated it?”
“I thought so too. Back then it was a constant reminder of my transgressions, but over time I think between us it became more of a term of endearment than a title. Somewhere along the way I unwittingly grew fond of hearing you call me that—among other things.”
Oh boy. I feel my cheeks burn red hot. I know exactly what other things he’s referring to. This conversation is going down a dangerous route I’m not so sure I’m ready for.
Jesus, but the way he makes my heart race with excitement like it’s about to sprout wings and burst right out of my chest. “What are you thinking about?”
Ah bugger, lewd thoughts imbue my brain and I suddenly realise I haven’t responded. I blink, shaking off the very inappropriate images of us having sex. “Uhm, n-nothing, I wasn’t thinking about anything.”
I don’t even have to see his face to know that he has the haughtiest smirk spread across that handsome mug of his right now. “Liar,” he burrs lowly. “A substantial amount of time may have passed Snowflake, but I have never, not for one goddamn second forgotten the sounds you make. That breathy, lust filled sigh of yours has plagued my mind since the very first time I had the pleasure of hearing it.” Talon expresses gruffly. I swallow thickly, my free hand fists the bed cover. I squeeze my thighs together when my pussy flutters with need.
Stupid pregnancy hormones. I only called to invite him to the Lamaze class, how the hell did the conversation derail and become about sex.
I swiftly clear my throat, forcing my eyes open and will away the incessant throbbing between my legs. “Oh yeah?”
