“Now hold up a minute!” This comes from Amber who is now by my side. “Put him down.”
I glance down at her. I don’t loosen my grip on the man’s shirt until I see she’s okay.
I release him with a shove and the man falls to the floor in a heap of body odor and grunts. “You’re fired. You’ve been a pain in my ass since the moment I hired you. Shoulda fired you after you broke Larry’s finger last week.”
“He deserved that!” Amber yells. Then she turns on me, her scowl making the skin above her chest and her cheeks pink. “Well, I guess you’ve just got yourself a new employee. Just what will I be doing for you?”
“Cooking and cleaning, like Blake said. If you don’t know how to do any of that, you can learn there.”
She takes off her waitress apron and tosses it over the bar. Then she grabs one of the tall glasses filled with bills and change where people have stuffed tips. “I’ll consider this my severance package.”
“In that case, grab both of them.” I nod to the other glass.
She does and then we’re out the door right before I’m certain a riot is about to start.
