How was that possible? Could this be a classic case of wanting what he couldn’t have?

He didn’t think so.

From the moment he’d seen her in the bar, she’d captured his interest. Within minutes of sliding into the Jacuzzi, he’d realized he wanted more. More than conversation, more than hot, mind-blowing sex. More than one night.

When he woke to find her gone the next morning, he’d vaulted out of bed, thrown on shorts, and rushed down to the lobby. His dishabille drew several curious eyes from the hotel’s fully dressed guests.

He couldn’t ask the registration clerk if Liv checked out because she’d never shared her last name. Dumbass that he was, he stayed an extra night, hoping she would appear in the bar again.

She hadn’t. He’d known it was a long shot. With her business completed, there was nothing to keep her there.

Not even him.

For days, he’d berated himself for not getting her number or a last name. Then she appeared one day, out of the blue. His lover, his one-night stand. His Jacuzzi mate.

An FBI agent. A widow. A mom.

All day, he’d vacillated between wanting to pin her sweet body against a wall, learning what she liked on her pancakes in the morning, and wishing he’d stayed in a different hotel three weeks ago.

There was no room. No room for a steady girlfriend, no room for a troubled boy, no room for fucking happiness.

An ache started at the center of his chest and climbed into his throat. His breaths came faster, his blood pumped hotter.

A low growl erupted from the dark void, where he pushed every fear, every longing, every sacrifice.

His arm struck out, sending candles and hot wax and match sticks across the dais.

A sharp hiss of breath sounded behind him at the same time the candles snuffed out.

Zeke whipped around to find Liv hovering half in and half out of the chapel, as if she’d been in the process of entering when his emotions had exploded.

Their eyes met across the distance, and Zeke hated her in that moment. Hated that she’d witnessed him at his weakest. Hated himself for hating her.

“Zeke, I’m sorry—”

“Get out.”
