“Liv, I’m sorry—”
She lifted a hand, cutting off his words of sympathy. One kind gesture from him, and she would spill the whole grisly story. “Are you sure it’s a good idea for us to stay? I don’t mind driving back and forth.”
He studied her features as if re-familiarizing himself with a favorite weapon he hadn’t fired in several years. “No, I’m not sure.”
Heat gathered low in her stomach, and her breathing grew harder to control. A surprise. Normally, any reminder of Tyler’s last days left her cold and hollow.
Something flickered in the dark depths of Zeke’s gaze a second before his face cleared. He pushed away from her vehicle. “But there’s plenty here to entertain your son.” He jerked his chin toward the Annex. “I’ll meet you at the parking lot.”
“I can give you a—”
He took off down the road.
“—lift.” Liv watched him put distance between them.
It was the smart thing to do, the responsible thing to do. The thing she should have done.
One breath. Two. Then three, and Liv blotted her son’s drool, released the brake pedal, and followed the one man she feared could release her secret desires from their dark prison.
