‘It’s in good nick, but we could always spruce it up a bit.’
Lili shook her head. ‘Yes, I suppose it could do with a new rug and some more furniture, but I’d want Alena’s portrait left over the fireplace.’
They both turned to look at the portrait of Lili’s great-grandmother.
‘I think that could be arranged,’ said Nate.
Alex was about to walk in and interrupt the conversation he wished Nate was not having with his girlfriend when a woman’s voice behind him stopped him in his tracks. ‘Excuse me.’
Alex turned around to find an old lady, small in stature, quite overweight and dressed all in black, leaning heavily on a walking stick.
The old lady said breathlessly, ‘Do you know where I might find Lili? Someone told me to try the old summerhouse?’
Nate and Lili exchanged a glance when they overheard a woman with a thick Mediterranean accent outside. Lili shot out of her seat as Alex appeared in the doorway with the lady on his arm. He frowned at Nate before saying, ‘Lili, I found her. I found Miriam.’
