“I don’t eat this kind of thing.” She licked a finger, and his eyes nearly crossed. He should walk away now before he disgraced himself.

“Food?”

“Ha ha. I mean pastries.”

“Why if you like them?”

“Because I promote healthy living and eating, so I can’t be seen eating things like this all the time.”

“Not all the time, no. But some of the time would be okay, surely?”

“It really should be okay, and I hadn’t realized until the pictures of me eating chocolate got out, that I rarely let myself eat anything bad, and especially not in public.”

“Stock up at your home. You can eat them there.”

“Good idea, but I think eating them in public sometimes is good too. I’m not perfect, and it’s wrong that people see me that way.”

She had chocolate on the side of her hand, and he grabbed it and licked it off before he’d given that action any thought. They both froze, eyes locked on each other.

“Nash, what are you doing?”

He turned to find Kirsty in the doorway.

“How could you do that with her!” Kirsty’s face was red with anger as she stomped up to the counter. “And you,” she jabbed a finger at Luna. “You have no right to come into this town and go after my man!”

“Cut it out,” he stepped between Luna and his ex. “What are you doing here, Kirsty?”

“I was going to get flowers,” she was trying to glare around him at Luna.

“Why? You live the next town over, and I know they have a florist.”

“I was visiting a friend.”

He’d dated her for long enough to know when she was lying. Before he could call her on it, she started yelling again.

“How could you do this to me, Nash?”

“Do what? You broke it off with me two years ago. Go away, Kirsty, and if you’re in Ryker Falls because of me, don’t come back.”

She started to cry, but tears had always been something she had a ready supply of.

“I’m not giving up on us. She can’t have you!” On those words Kirsty ran out of the shop.

He turned back to face Luna.

“Girlfriend?” The word came out coated in ice.

“Ex as I believe I pointed out to Kirsty.” He decided his best move was to ignore the hand licking.

“She seemed pretty upset for an ex.”

Luna looked seriously annoyed, and he couldn’t say he blamed her. Kirsty had been rude to her with no provocation on her part.

“She wants us to become reacquainted. I don’t. End of story.”

And this is what happens when you interact with people, Nash. Things get complicated.

“Does Goth Girl know you’re doing that?”
