“That’s who killed your brother. And she has been tracking them down and getting them to help take you out.”
Colin’s gaze slid to me.
“I never found any proof of who killed Cody,” I insisted.
And that was true.
It was all just carefully collected breadcrumbs that led to the Grassi Family. And when I found the Grassi Family, I figured out who their enforcer or hitman or whatever you wanted to call him was.
It was all circumstantial.
“No. No, of course you didn’t,” Colin said, making both me and my brother stiffen.
“What?”
“It was all very convenient, wasn’t it?” Colin asked, something in his voice making my blood run cold. “All of a sudden, he was being courted by the notorious Calgary Family. Who wanted to work with him even though he was a nobody still. This organization was nothing before I came along.”
Wait.
No.
“You were the Calgary Family.”
“Well, no, my dear. I am not the leader of the Calgary Family. I only pretended to be to get the information I needed out of my brother.”
So he could take over.
He was who got Cody killed.
By courting his own brother on the dark web, where Cody liked to look for connections or tips on how to run his up-and-coming organization. In doing so, Colin was making chatter. Chatter that the mafia had picked up on, and didn’t like, so they made a plan to take him out.
“Only I didn’t get it all,” he said, looking back at me.
The money.
He didn’t get the money.
“All what?” I asked.
“She’s lying to you. She knows about the money,” Lucas insisted.
“Cody didn’t have that much money.”
Personally.
Because he was saving it to make his deal. Sure, he was living like a king in a poor neighborhood, but he wasn’t mafia rich. Not yet anyway. If he’d lived, I bet he would have gotten there. Without creating all the fear and pain that Colin did with his reign.
“You lying bitch!” Lucas snarled, taking long strides toward me.
This time, though, Colin didn’t stop him when he got close, then cocked back to swing.
“Question her,” Colin demanded, the words like a knife to my stomach.
Because I knew any hope I had of him saving me was gone.
Because I knew my brother was about to torture information out of me.
“Where are you going?” Lucas asked.
