Alastair’s brows pinched together. “I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”

“I overheard you talking about taking a wife and that you’d want me to be your mistress.”

Graham grunted. “What the hell, brother?”

Alastair sighed. “I was talking to a few of the cousins. They brought it up.”

Beth shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. I’ve written you a letter. If you would get someone to take me uptown, I’d appreciate it.”

“I’m not letting you go, Beth. Take the suitcase upstairs and unpack it. I’ll be up shortly to talk.”

Faith felt tears fill her eyes at the pain in the woman’s eyes.

“No. You need to find someone who will make your family stronger, and I’m a nobody.”

“Beth, you’ll go to our rooms right now. I’ll have one of the men take the case up later.”

Alastair went to the door and called out, and within a minute, a man came.

“What do you need, boss?”

“Take Beth to our rooms and make sure she stays there.”

The man nodded and started to walk toward Beth. Faith stepped in front of him. “Don’t you touch her.”

“Faith, come with me. This is none of our business,” Graham said.

Faith shook her head. “No. Someone needs to stand up for her, and I’m her friend.”

“Faith, I know you are a part of the family, but anything between Beth and me is private. Please leave,” Alastair said.

Faith looked at Beth.

“Go. We’ll talk later,” Beth said. “I don’t want you to get in trouble.”

“If you need me, just call.”

They hugged, and Faith watched as the man latched on to Beth’s arm and led her out of the room. She saw Alastair’s gaze follow her out of the room.

“Come to me,” Graham said.

Faith exhaled and walked to his side. “I won’t allow my sisters to marry you, Alastair. So, you’ll have to find someone else. I promise you that I’ll help Beth out as much as I can.”

Alastair pinched the bridge of his nose. “I applaud your loyalty to my Beth, but she doesn’t need it. She’s got me.”

“Not for much longer,” Faith said.
