He leads me into the exam room and closes the door. “Take a deep breath. It’s all good.” He bends his knees so he can look into my eyes. “We made a baby!”
“This is what happens when I play with fire.”
His grin is the sexiest thing in this universe and the next. I continue to wonder what I did to get so lucky as to find him in this world. Well, I donated the bone marrow that saved his daughter’s life, but the rest of the story, our story, is one that continues to amaze me all the time. “You’re hot like fire, and I can’t get enough of you. I love that we made a baby. I can’t wait.”
“It takes a few months, you know.”
“Really? How long?”
I roll my eyes at his silliness. “You know because you’ve already had a baby.”
“When can we tell everyone we know?”
“Not until at least three months along. We want to make sure nothing goes wrong.”
“Nothing will go wrong. I won’t let it.”
“Unfortunately, not even you can control that, and besides, you won’t be here for most of it.”
His grin falters for the first time. “I hate that I’ll be gone so much. Maybe I should just retire so I can stay home and rub your belly and your feet and any other part of you that needs rubbed.”
“You just signed a new contract, so stop that nonsense right now.”
He hugs me tightly. “I don’t want to be away from you.”
I breathe in the clean, citrusy scent of my love. “I don’t want you to be away from me either, but your career is important, and you need to stay focused on that during your season.”
“We’ve got a few more weeks to spend together, and I’m going to take such good care of you before I have to go.” He smooths the hair back from my face. “Don’t worry about anything, okay?”
“I’ll try not to. As long as I have you and Everly and now our baby on the way, I have nothing to worry about.”
Austin’s eyes brighten for a second. “You know how my brothers are coming this weekend to hang out before the season starts?”
“Sure, what about it?”
“I have the perfect idea.”
“What idea is that?”
“Let me see if I can pull it off, and then I’ll let you know.” Austin kisses my forehead and hugs me again. “In the meantime, don’t worry about a thing. You’ll always have us. Forever and ever.”
“That’s all I need.”
