“Yeah.”

“Then my daughter and I will have to find a way to see a lot of each other. We can FaceTime and talk on the phone and get to know each other the newfangled way. Whatever it takes.”

“I think she’s very lucky to have found you and your family. It’ll make all the difference to her to know you’re here and that you care.”

“I do care. Hearing from her was such a shock, but once that wore off, it was just curiosity and concern and so many other emotions.”

“I can’t imagine what that must’ve been like for you.”

“My wife said we need to see it as a blessing. Two more people to love.”

“That’s a nice way to look at it.”

“She’s right. It’s not Sofia’s fault this was handled the way it was—or mine. All we can do is make the best of it. And that’s what we’ll do.”

“If I were to ask your daughter to marry me, sir, would I have your blessing?”

Jon laughs. “I hear daughters these days want their fathers to say that the only blessing they need is that of the prospective bride. But you seem like a nice young man, Nico, and you obviously love them both. You’d have my blessing, for what it’s worth.”

“I think it’ll be worth a lot to a woman who’s never had a father to look out for her.”
