“Everyone knew this. They’re assholes but they are upfront about it. I think Molly fell into that trap that so many women do. They think they’ll be the ones to change someone. They’ll be the ones to make the difference.”

He shakes his head, but I get what he’s saying. I know exactly the kind of mindset he’s referring to. I’ve seen it a dozen times. The good girl trying to reform the bad boy. The problem is, these guys don’t want fixing. All that happens is they leave a string of broken hearts and false promises in their wake.

“Do you think she jumped?”

“I can’t say I thought too hard about it. I was told she jumped, so I had no reason to look at it differently until I saw that photo. But now Hunter is saying there was a note…I’m back to having no fucking clue what’s going on.”

“I wonder if it was signed,” I muse out loud.

“What?”

I shake my head. “Nothing,”

“No, don’t do that. Not with me. Do you think Molly killed herself?”

“I didn’t know her or know all the details, but there are a lot of coincidences floating around here with a couple of other suicides. I get it. Suicide isn’t unheard of, especially given the age of everyone, hormones, and shit flying around, then throw in drugs and alcohol. It’s always a recipe for disaster. Here it’s even worse because these kids are virtually given a get out of jail free card. Their parents bail them out and just shut everyone up with their money. What they need is help. What they have is absentee parents and a sick freak preying on young girls.”

“What are you going to do?”

“See if I can get anything out of Cain, but he won’t talk if he doesn’t want to.”

“You could always try the party next week. Might be some people there who remember Molly.”

“Party?”

He looks at me for a second before turning back to the road.

“Yeah, it’s at Stonecroft.”

Cassandra’s building. Of course it is.
