I grin, probably a bit too widely, before pulling up the calendar for the day. “You have a one o’clock appointment with a new client. I put you in Conference room 3.”

“Yes. That’s why I’m here. I was hoping you’d want to assist on this one. It’s this cool new dating app that has everyone talking already.” She wiggles in delight. “This is one of the biggest accounts I’ve ever landed for Mirage.”

“I’m available to assist, Ms. Taylor!”

Mya rolls her eyes sl

ightly before turning around. “Yes, I know. Anya, you’ve met Val before, right? She’s one of the interns.”

I nod and wave at Val. Mya campaigned to get an internship program started for ages before Law would finally approve it and he asked for my help verifying the resumes. Valor Wheaton came highly recommended by all of her college professors and had a 4.2 GPA.

“Why do you need more help? If you already have an intern, then it sounds like you’ve got it covered.”

I really hope she has it covered because I’m not thrilled at the idea of working on a dating app. It’ll just be one more thing that shows me how pathetic I am.

The people using that app will probably be married before I am.

“Because she just wants a chance to eyeball Seth Barrington.”

The name sounds so familiar. I have a hazy image of a handsome guy with intense eyes. “Seth Barrington? The finance guy?”

Mya grins. “That’s the one. Washington DC’s own Midas. Everything he does turns out making bank so we feel pretty damn good about this launch. I need someone with experience and not someone who is going to fangirl all over him.”

Val shrugs sheepishly. “My major is marketing but I’m minoring in Finance. Seth Barrington is one of the guys we study in school. He is just like… goals.”

Mya’s shoulders drop. “Anya, I’m begging you. Help.”

It’s flattering that one of the top marketing agents has asked me to assist on so many campaigns. Maybe sinking my teeth into a juicy new project is exactly the distraction I need.

“So what’s the deal with this dating app? How is it different from all the other ones?”

Mya looks smug. “Because this one helps you put your best foot forward. Most of these apps are just a meat market. You post a selfie and hope for the best. But if you aren’t getting any results you have no idea why. This app pairs you with professionals to write your bio, photographers to take your profile photo and they even have career consultants on dial. It’s like a dating app and a glam squad in one. It’s brilliant.”

“It sounds like it.”

“Does that mean you’ll be one of our beta testers?” Mya clutches her clipboard to her chest in excitement.

“What? Oh no. I’m just here to work.”

“Okay.”

She doesn’t say anything else but I can tell from her tone of voice this is going to come up again.

Great.

“I’ll do the beta test.”

We both look over to see one of the junior agents, Wallace Burns, standing in the middle of the hallway.

His face flames bright red before he clears his throat. “I could use some help.”

Mya’s face softens. I think we both melt a little at the soft, bashful confession. Wallace comes across a bit bumbling but he’s hardworking and really a sweet guy.

“Great. The more people we can get to try it out before the launch the better.” Mya glances over at me and looks like she wants to say something else but settles for, “See you at one o’clock.”

After Mya leaves, I turn around to find Wallace still standing there.

“Is everything okay?”
