“They said only family. Harper doesn’t have any. No siblings and her parents passed years ago. Please.”

“She’s in surgery.”

I fall to the floor next to him, head in my hands, wondering how this could possibly be happening. Harper didn’t seem like she could hurt a fly, so why her? None of this makes any sense, and my head aches trying to figure it out.

Damon rushes out of the elevator, and crouches down next to me. “How is she? I called Tessa, and she’s on her way.”

“They won’t tell me a goddamn thing besides she’s in surgery. I can’t see her, only family. Do you know how fucked up that is?”

A doctor comes out, and begins talking to Scott. I pretend not to listen.

“She’s out of surgery, but there might be complications. She had a brain bleed, and will be kept in a coma to allow time for it to heal.”

A freaking coma? Brain bleed? Oh, Harper. I was supposed to protect you and I failed.

Damon is speaking to Scott, and I try to calm myself down.

“Listen, they are going to talk to the hospital and explain the situation. Since you were with her yesterday, they might be able to get a little leniency on the rule.”

My head flies back as I thank God. Surely, they understand. What if it is one of their girlfriend’s?

Tessa steps off the elevator franticly, not able to stop crying.

“Where is she? What happened?”

I pull her in close, with my arms around her. “We don’t know anything except she’s in a coma.”

“When can we see her?”

“They won’t let anyone see her unless they are family. We both know she has none.”

“Oh, I’m seeing her, whether they like it or not. My girl isn’t going to be posted up in some hospital bed, possibly dying alone.”

Let’s not even go there. She’s not going to die. Not on my watch.

Damon and Tessa sit with me on the floor, waiting for the other cop to come back and let us know if we can see her. Honestly, I don’t know what I will do if they say no. I can go in any way, and maybe get arrested, but will they really arrest me for trying to see my comatose girlfriend?

It’s not like I can possibly be a suspect.

“So, we have to go through some channels before we can allow you in. The detective is reaching out to verify your whereabouts for today, and once they can confirm you have a solid alibi then we can rule you out.”

“You think I fucking did this to her?” I yell, knuckles white. “What kind of monster do you think I am?”

Damon tugs on my arm, “Chill. Once they rule you out, you can see her. Stop acting like an idiot.”

Scott flinches like he expected me to hit him. “I’m sorry, but I have to go through the procedure. Can’t risk my job. Got kids at home to feed.”

“However, the Chief of Staff agreed to let me supervise you in the room for her protection, until they can rule you out.”

“I don’t give a shit. Just take me to see her.”

Tessa jumps in. “Can I see her, too?”

Scott says no, only one visitor at a time right now. She will have to get cleared as well.

He makes a good point, because the asshole that did this, could be trying to get in to see her right now. “Nobody sees her but me and Tessa.”

“The exception is just for you. Until alibi’s are sorted and you surrender fingerprints.”
