Cason snorted and then laughed. “I haven’t been called that since my coach said it in high school.”
“Well, it fits if you think we’re going to leave it all on you.”
“Devon’s headed back, so I won’t be on my own.”
“Hell, I’ve never met the guy, but he’s probably a bonehead, too.”
Eli cleared his throat. “I forgot to warn you about Caleb. He doesn’t have a filter unless Bella’s around.”
Kane snickered. “Eli, don’t you think Caleb and Devon will be great friends?”
Eli laughed. “Yeah, they're both obnoxious assholes. They’ll be best friends.”
“Hey,” Caleb barked into the phone. “You keep this up, and you might hurt my feelings.”
Kane chucked. “You’d have to have feelings to hurt them.”
Cason threw back his head and laughed. Damn, these guys were a riot. He was glad Eli talked them into moving to Arkansas and starting their business here. They had thought to go to California, but the cost of living and properties were sky-high on the coast.
“Guys, I’m going to get a file going, and we’ll talk about it tomorrow. Can you give me the name of a clothing store so I can get Lacey some things?”
“I’ll have the girls take care of it. You work on the file,” Kane told him.
“Thank you, guys.”
“Don’t thank us yet. You’re going to really owe us.”
Kane grunted. “Shut up, Caleb. Don’t listen to him, Cason.”
“No, he’s right. We’ll just see what he asks for.”
Cason spent the next several hours calling contacts he had when he worked Homeland Security and called in a few favors.
When he finally turned off the desk light, he had compiled a thick file for the guys to go over the next day.
He thought about grabbing a bite to eat, but he’d been thinking about crawling into bed beside Lacey. He’d much rather do that than eat, even if he couldn’t touch her.
He hurried through a shower and pulled shorts on before sliding into bed. On his side, he could make out some of her features with the dim light he left on in the bathroom in case she woke up during the night.
He couldn’t get over how pretty she was, and although he wanted her, a part of him was afraid to get to attached because while he was handsome, his partner Devon was GQ gorgeous and always had women falling all over him.
What if the minute she saw him, she decided she’d rather be with him? Jesus. He’d never in his life been insecure, but he was at that moment, and he would continue to be until his partner and Lacey meet.
He’d decide what to do from there.
