The day had finally come, and Bella was away from the condo with Michael. He planned to drop her off in an hour or so. Plenty of time to get Helen out of the place for good.
Caleb listened to Helen’s voice and the police officer giving her the Miranda Rights fade as the elevator descended.
He exhaled before looking at the two men. “You’ve got your work cut out for. She’ll fight you every step of the way.”
They both grinned.
“I look forward to it,” the DA said. “I’ve seen every one of Isabel’s shows, and she seems like a sweet woman. I hate that her own mother could do this.”
“Oh, my Bella is very sweet and beautiful and smart.”
“Biased much?” the detective asked and smirked.
Caleb chuckled. “Maybe, but it’s the truth.”
The DA came forward and shook his hand, and then the detective did.
“Thank you. You know, if you ever want a job, I’d hire you,” the DA said.
Caleb threw his head back and laughed. “You’d get sick of me pretty quickly. Just ask my partners. I’m kind of an asshole.”
Both men laughed and waved, and they got on the elevator.
The detective put his hand out to stop the door from sliding closed. “I can’t wait to see what she does when she learns all her accounts have been frozen and she has no money to get a good lawyer. When the case has been settled, the money will all be turned over to Bella.”
Caleb grinned and watched the door close. He looked around the apartment. It was too damn quiet without his little star, and he couldn’t wait until she came back.
There was a lot for them to discuss and many decisions to make. He was confident of one thing: he and Bella would not be separated ever again.
It was the pain he knew she would feel that made his heart ache for her.
