And when they found out what sort of woman I was… they’d never stick by me.

I was one-hundred percent sure of that.

Chapter 6.

Grayson.

Looking at my mate, deep into her eyes for the first time ever, made me want to drop to my knees and thank the Heavens for their gift.

It also made me want to run. To shift. To rip apart the man responsible for her car accident.

My fingers curled into fists and I tightened them, fighting the inner demon.

“Thank you for saving me, for bringing me back to Claire tonight,” Nevaeh said.

I nodded once, feeling my teeth descend.

She looked at Brad in confusion, who chuckled. “Grayson is having trouble controlling his wolf. I don’t think he can talk.”

Nevaeh pulled up her blankets in a move that indicated fear.

I couldn’t have that.

I forced my wolf down and my anger back inside.

“It’s… not you. I am… angry that the bear shifter got away.” I took some breaths, calming the racing of my heart. “I’m sorry you were in that accident at all.”

Claire began to back towards the door. “I’m going to go put the kettle on so I can make Nevaeh a hot cup of cocoa, then she’s going to sleep. You three have five minutes before I kick you all out.”

I smiled at the diminutive female. The very fact she could joke about such a thing lightened the mood in the whole room.

She left us, though the door remained wide open, and we moved slowly towards the bed.

“Is there anything we can get you before we go?” I asked Nevaeh, stepping close to the bed and reaching out to touch her leg.

She pulled back, shrinking into the pillows.

“What’s wrong?”

“I know you guys are probably, like… naturalists or something. But could you cover up a bit? You’re intimidating me.”

Brad grabbed one of Jay’s shirts and pulled it on, then went and sat on the bed with her.

Aaron and I had to walk out to the lounge room to pull on the shirts we’d left on Claire’s doorstep.

Claire was laughing from the kitchen.

“What’s so funny, Doc?” I asked her.

“I knew she’d have an issue with you guys being half naked. I didn’t want to say anything because everyone was so tense in there, but just so you know… humans aren’t used to massive muscle-bound guys walking around, looking like that.”

I glanced down at my now covered body.

“Okay. Thanks for the tip.”

So, we stayed clothed.

Until she got used to us.
