“No. Although I enquired at a job recruitment agency and they said they’d call in regards to an interview… or something like that. I wasn’t really listening, to be honest.”

We got in the car and I turned the key. I was surprised by the amount of disappointment running through my blood. Like a cancer, insidious and potent

I forced out a laugh, trying to lighten the mood. “After a decade of thinking we had no fated mate, we shouldn’t expect her to just turn up on our doorstep, right?”

Aaron nodded, then looked out the window and didn’t say anything else.

Mopey bastard.

I sighed and turned the car back towards the pack.

Despite my conscious efforts to stay positive and grateful, Aaron’s shitty attitude pretty much summed up how I felt too.

We’d waited long enough.

I didn’t want to wait any more.

It was our time to find our mate. To begin our life. To finally be a true family. Because without a woman, without children, we were nothing.

Chapter 1.

A month later

Nevaeh.

“Seriously, Claire. Why on earth would you choose to move ALL the way out here?”

My old car bumbled along the dirt road that led into some sort of secret compound that no-one knew about.

Not even google could find the address when I’d plugged it in. If Claire hadn’t left me hand written instructions at the hospital, I would never have found the place.

That should have been my first hint that something dodgy was going on.

“Oh… There they are.”

Houses began to appear out of nowhere, cut into the hill side. Well-made, large homes sitting on big plots of land.

I glanced at the sheet of paper from Claire for the thousandth time.

First house on the left.

Number seven.

Double story with my new black truck parked around the back.

I looked up at the house to my left.

Yep. Looks like the right one.

I pulled up into the strange sort-of driveway and got out of the car.

The roads weren’t that wide and the lack of driveways made no sense. Did everyone park around the back? Or did everyone walk everywhere?

“She’s lured me out here to la-la land.”

I admired Claire more than any woman I’d ever known. She was easily the most driven, accomplished female physician I’d ever met, but she’d changed somehow in the past month or so. People at work thought it was due to her breaking her arm during the attack at the hospital, but I had another theory.

I had a feeling it had everything to do with the man she’d moved out here for. And I was here to find out if I was right.
