Obviously.
“Fuck! There they are! Get your shotgun.” The other man stomped around the room and I tried not to move, though I wanted to.
I slowly lifted my head and opened the eye that was not swollen shut.
It was definitely Trevor’s dad, if his physique and receding hairline were to be believed.
He lifted the weapon and said the best thing I’d heard all day.
“Fucking wolf shifters.”
Then the gun went off and I cried out, my heart pummelling into my ribs as adrenaline raced through my veins.
Trevor ran over to me. “They’re not going to get you, you stupid, little bitch. You were mine first.”
He yanked at my arms and seemed to be untying me. Then I was on my feet and being hauled to the front door.
“What’s happening? I can’t see.” I whispered, leaning against Trevor as though I didn’t even have the strength to stand.
I did, though.
And I could run if the need rose.
“They’re leaving. Ha! Your wolves are cowards. Look at them run.”
“What’s happening, Trevor? Tell me,” I whispered.
He chuckled and I relaxed into him even more.
I didn’t care what he did to me today, as long as I was alive at the end of it and could walk away.
“We shot the little brown wolf and they’re taking him away… hang on. Shit. The other four are still here. That’s two Alphas and their Betas. Dad, we can’t take on all four of them.”
“Oh, yes we can. You shift and take on the Alpha and I’ll be right behind you with a shotgun. It’s time we got rid of this whole pack.”
I held my breath, waiting for them to decide what to do with me.
Trevor seemed to think me inconsequential, because he tossed me aside and strode out the front door. Pain shot through my elbow and my leg as I landed on the ground.
The older man chuckled. “I wish he hadn’t hit you quite so hard, girly. This is something you’ll want to see.”
I dragged myself slowly across the floor to the window and managed to pull myself to a stand.
My whole body ached, but as my one eye that worked focused on my men stalking towards the cottage, my pain disappeared, and fear consumed me.
My throat closed up and an invisible band pressed against my ribs.
My men had come to save me.
They hadn’t rejected me, nor abandoned me. They were here for me, when I most needed them.
When had anyone else in my entire life been able to be counted on like that?
Tears blinded me and I sniffed loudly, wiping at my face with my sleeve.
A growl rolled through the clearing as Trevor pulled off his shirt and his soft, but very large body transformed into an eight-foot-tall, black bear.
The old man in the cabin with me said, “Okay, Alpha. You’re going down.”
