‘So what? I couldn’t make a film on my own, but I’m still the director.’
She frowned, her forehead furrowing as a patch of sunlight bowled across her face. ‘Exactly—you make it all happen,’ she said.
‘With help,’ he echoed. He saw her eyes drop to his mouth and he smiled. ‘I mean, I know how to work most of the equipment, but I’m no expert—and I certainly can’t act. Although I have tried.’
He felt his heart start punching against his ribcage as her mouth fluttered at the corners.
‘I thought that memory might be seared on your brain.’ He screwed up his face. ‘Probably trying a cockney accent was a little ambitious…’
She bit her lip. ‘The high heels were a nice touch, though.’
His eyes held hers. ‘Fortunately for me, you’re my only witness.’
‘True. But, unfortunately for you, I didn’t sign an NDA.’
He knew he was staring at her again, but it was impossible to look away from her soft brown eyes and even softer pink lips.
‘Oh, I can think of more enjoyable ways to stop you talking,’ he said slowly, his eyes holding hers, letting her know what he wanted.
The silence shivered between them.
Watching her irises darken, he felt his body harden, and then her eyes jerked away from his as they heard someone shout.
It was lunchtime.
‘Let me drive.’
Farlan held out his hand and this time Nia handed him the keys with some relief.
The Land Rover was a solid workhorse, but the brake pads were a little worn and sometimes it felt as if the wheels were slipping away from her.
And Farlan liked driving. He had that combination of focus and
control that made it look effortless.
Suddenly she realised he had peeled off from the line of ATVs heading down to the lake. ‘Where are you going?’
‘You did say there’d be time for a little fun later.’
‘And you said that you had a call with your producer—’
‘I’ll speak to him tomorrow. Right now, you and I have a date with a hill and a sledge.’
A date.
The air thumped out of her lungs, his words spinning inside her head, glittering and fragile, like a flurry of snowflakes.
‘I don’t have a sledge with me,’ she said quickly.
‘Actually, you do.’ He grinned. ‘I borrowed Allan’s. It’s in the back.’
He slowed the car. ‘Come on, Nia. It’s just a bit of fun. For old times’ sake.’ His mouth tugged at the corners.
She felt her heart hurtle as if it was on a sledge already. He was so hard to resist, and she could feel herself responding, her body unfurling as if it was reawakening after long years of hibernation.
After what had happened in the library she knew it was too risky. Only refusing would make him more determined to persuade her. He was single-minded, driven in a way she had never understood and couldn’t hope to emulate.
And his eyes were so soft and intent…
