“Rory. How’s she handling the breakup with Raine?”
“She’s fine. I think she’s made her peace with it.”
Brock grins. “I’m glad to hear that.”
I cock my head. Is Brock Steel interested in my sister? Can’t be. He’s younger than she is by about four years. Plus, he’s a known womanizer.
Of course, so was Donny before he and I got together.
I can’t help the smile. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Rory ended up with one of the Three Rake-a-teers? The term she herself coined? If two of the Pike sisters ended up with two of the Rake-a-teers?
But Brock is so not Rory’s type.
Sure, she likes men as well as women, but she never goes for the obvious types. Someone like Brock… It just isn’t going to happen.
“She’s over at the studio. Teaching her lessons.”
“You and Rory will be at our party this weekend celebrating Uncle Talon’s homecoming, right?”
“You know we’d never miss a Steel party.”
“Is Rory singing?”
“I have no idea. Neither Jesse nor Rory has mentioned playing at the party.”
“She has the voice of an angel, that one.”
I nod. “I can’t disagree with you there.”
Donny comes bustling through the hallway then. “Brock, what are you doing here?”
“Just chatting with your lovely lady, but I do need to talk to you.”
“Sure, come on into my office.” Then Donny looks over his shoulder. “Callie, you come too.”
I rise and follow them into the office. I take a seat next to Brock, while Donny sits behind his desk.
“What do you need, Brock?”
Brock nods to me. “I need to talk to you about something in private.”
“I’ve brought Callie up to speed. I want her involved.”
“Well…okay, I guess.”
“So what’s up?”
“Dale and I are going over to the north property tonight. We wanted to know if you wanted to come along.”
“I don’t know. Dad just got back from the hospital.”
“I know, but Dale and I don’t want to wait on this.”
“What about your dad?”
Brock clears his throat. “Dale and I have talked. We’re going to keep this on the down low, away from Dad for the moment.”
“Why?”
