She closed her eyes and I saw a hint of a smile playing on her lips. A tear escaped from her eyelid and ran down her cheek, and when I reached over to wipe it away, she grabbed my hand. I could feel her pulse racing through her skin and I gently lifted her hand to my mouth and kissed the knuckles. Lily sighed and opened her fingers slowly. I inhaled the spicy sweet jasmine fragrance that emanated from her warm skin before lightly kissing her palm.
“I said yes,” Lily repeated in a throaty whisper. “Yes, I’ll go with you and do this.”
I felt happiness flood my entire body. “Really?” I asked. “You’d do that?”
She nodded. “I believe you,” she said quietly. “And I love you, too.”
As I scooped her up from the chair and swirled her around in my arms, Lily laughed and buried her face in my neck. She mumbled something unintelligible and I pulled away briefly, cocking my head. “What is it, love?” I asked, brushing her lips with my thumb.
Lily smiled. “Just that I’d better not be an assistant,” she said warily before looking into my eyes and cracking up. “I don’t think I’m very well suited to that type of role after all.”
