Chapter 6

Finnegan

“There’s that smile again,” Kit says.

He just got back from doing who knows what, but as the weapons expert for Blackbridge Security, it probably has to do with guns and ammo.

“Can’t I just be a happy guy?” I say, the smile even bigger today since I received a call from Mr. Crosby that not only were the people across the hall moving, but they’d be out in a week’s time.

“You can, but you seem happier right now than Gaige, and that man just walked in with Leighton, and you know what the two of them have been up to lately,” he argues.

“She seemed upset,” I say, speaking of Leighton who just walked through here with Gaige and into Wren’s office.

“It’ll get sorted,” Kit says. “It always does.”

“Haven’t you guys got anything better to do than sit around here?” Deacon asks as he walks into the room.

“Not all of us have a gorgeous wife and a cute little boy to get home to,” Kit says.

Deacon narrows his eyes at Kit for the gorgeous wife comment. He knows his wife is gorgeous. It’s just that Kit is an idiot for saying it out loud, especially so soon after the lifted-shirt, ab-reveal incident a few days ago.

“I’m getting out of the line of fire,” I mutter as I stand and make my way to the coffee pot.

I don’t really need caffeine this late in the day, but I also don’t need to get blood spatter on my favorite t-shirt when Deacon decides to take Kit’s head off either.

Wren’s office door opens, but the crying Leighton that entered the office, isn’t the same woman who exits.

“Daddy needs love, too!” Puff Daddy, Wren’s obnoxious African grey parrot, squawks from inside the office.

Gaige ignores the bird. Like everyone else, he knows that giving the thing more attention only makes things worse. He’s too busy whispering in Leighton’s ear as they walk across the office.

I grin, feeling a little warmer to the idea of all my friends falling in love, but that has more to do with the hot blonde I’ve been chatting up at the gym than their own happiness. I cringe thinking just how selfish that sounds in my head as I turn back to the single use coffee pot that’s sputtering out the last of my cup.

“Finnegan Jenkins!” a woman screams.

I’m lifting my cup to my lips as I turn around, and I can’t help the smile that spreads across my lips when I see that it’s none other than Kendall from the gym.

She doesn’t seem very happy as she rips open her jacket, but I’m happy to see her. Despite the very clearly fake bomb she’s strapped to herself, I smile.

What isn’t funny is the pure terror in Leighton’s eyes as she witnesses this crazy damn woman in the middle of the office.

To make matters worse, Puff Daddy flies out of Wren’s office screaming, “Take cover, we’re going to fucking die!”

Kit chuckles on the sofa, but I’m no longer seeing the humor in the situation.

“You crazy woman!” I yell. “Are you trying to get shot, coming in here like this?”

I highly doubt Kit would even point a gun at this woman, but everyone in the office, including Pam, the office manager who is standing directly behind Kendall, is armed.

“I’ll blow this whole place up!”

“You’ll do no such thing! Get your pretty ass over here!”

Kendall glares at me as if she truly wants me dead, but she doesn’t move in my direction. Instead of listening, her thumb hovers over what she wants us to believe is the detonation switch on a bomb. Hating that she’s turned out to be another crazy one, I smack my cup of coffee down on the counter and cross the room to her.

I don’t hesitate to lift her off the ground and drape her over my shoulder. Smacking her ass is just a bonus as I carry her out of the room toward my office.

“Put me down, you asshole!”

I don’t put her down until we’re both in my office. I kick the door closed, turning around just in time to see her swiping some of her wild hair out of her eyes. It’s a nice look on her, and the first time I’ve seen it not tied up for a workout.

“Do not look at me like that,” she snaps when I let my eyes sweep the length of her. “Are you all crazy?”

“Really? You’re asking me that?” I ask, trying to hide the humor in my voice because she seems so serious right now.

“That’s right. Did you forget I have a bomb?”

I walk closer until I’m standing in front of her. She glares at me when I pull what she’s trying to make look like a detonation switch from the spray-painted roll of Lifesavers and pop the thing in my mouth.
