The name was familiar. I remembered her well. She was a rather difficult bride, what one might call a “Bridezilla,” in fact, but we managed to meet all of her crazy requests anyway.
“Why did she come after me?” I had done everything she wanted, and while I felt a twinge of sadness for her being left at the altar, I certainly didn’t deserve to be poisoned over it.
“It wasn’t just you, ma’am. When I got back to the station last night, I looked at other open case files, and it turns out she was stalking almost all of the vendors from her ‘would be’ wedding. She simply turned her focus to you because you had a wedding of your own coming up, and she knew who Jacob was from the hospital.”
“See, Jackie? I told you we weren’t cursed. It’s crazy, but it has nothing to do with us!” He was brimming with joy.
“I can’t believe that she’s been after us for over a year. That’s so scary, and so sad,” I said.
Officer Anderson replied, “Well, she clearly needs help and hopefully now she’ll be able to get it. She’s in custody, and you shouldn’t have any more issues surrounding your wedding, your shop, or anything else, for that matter. Normally, I would’ve waited until Monday to get in touch but I thought you two might like to have these today.” He reached down de
ep into the pocket of his trousers and pulled out our stolen wedding rings.
“Oh my God!” Jacob exclaimed. “You brought them?”
“I couldn’t let you two get hitched without your grandparents’ rings. My wife would kill me if I had let that wait until next week.” He handed the rings over to Jacob with a wide grin. “Now, you two have a blessed wedding day, and an even more blessed marriage. I think my work here is done.”
“Officer, are you sure you wouldn’t like to stay and celebrate with us? I can’t thank you enough,” I offered.
“That’s lovely of you to ask, but I have a wife who actually enjoys my company, and I’d like to get on home to her after a long night of solving crimes.” He chuckled and left the rest of us standing in awe.
“What a lovely man.” Aunt Lydia was the first to speak.
“That’s for sure,” I replied.
“Well, what do you say we go get married? It is about that time,” Jacob said, holding his arm out for me to take.
“I think that’s a fine idea,” I said with a grin.
“Ladies, follow me. It’s time for me to marry the love of my life.”
And that’s what we did. We bucked all tradition and walked ourselves down the aisle, arm-in-arm.
