“Okay. So tell me how this all happened,” I said.

“Yes, yes, yes. Okay, so. You know I had a shit day Monday at work.”

“You called me crying, yes.”

“Right

. Well, after I called you, I walked into my apartment and found Lucas just standing there.”

“Bianca let him in. Got it,” I said.

“Right. And the second he saw me crying, he wrapped me up in his arms and held me close. It was so sweet.”

“Because I’m a sweetheart,” Lucas said, grinning.

“We aren’t tooting your horn until I approve of the way you proposed,” I said.

“You’re screwed,” Everett said, chuckling.

“Continue,” I said.

“Right. So, he ordered dinner and we talked. I vented to him about my day. He stayed over and he held me while I fell asleep, and when I woke up he wasn’t there. Which was fine. I figured he left. You know, work and all.”

“Right. Work. Houses and stuff.”

“Yeah, all that. Well, when I got out of bed the most wonderful smell hit my nostrils,” she said.

“Oh, he cooked breakfast. You’re getting warmer, Lucas,” I said.

“Keep listening,” he said, smiling.

“Yes. Keep listening,” Jessica said.

“So, you went out and saw breakfast?” I asked.

“I did, but there was no Lucas. I mean, I knew he was there because the food was hot and the coffee was fresh, but he wasn’t at the table.”

“Where was he?”

“That’s the thing. When he said my name behind me, I turned around and he was down on one knee.”

“What!?”

“Yeah. Just, right there. In the apartment. After cooking breakfast and holding me while I slept and helping me through a rough day at work. My hair was all knotted up and I still had sleep in my eyes, and he got down on one knee and proposed right then and there. With me looking like a hot ass mess.”

“Oh my gosh, he loves you even when you look like shit,” I said.

“It was so personal and romantic, and I liked that it was just the two of us. A moment for us to share and remember for the rest of our lives. He had this whole long, drawn-out speech done up, but I can only remember a part of it. I was so stunned and so in awe of what was happening, and of course I cried.”

“Of course,” I said.

“So, I said yes, we ate breakfast, and then we had second breakfast.”

The two of us laughed while the guys shook their heads.

“And they say we’re bad when it comes to talking about sex,” Everett said.

Jessica and I shared another hearty laugh as Lucas pulled us all into the park. We hopped out and gathered up our things, and soon Kane and Ruby were at our sides helping us. They embraced me, and Kane kissed the side of my face, then all of us started for the picnic tables they had set up in the park. Things had been going really well with Everett’s parents. Kane and I were actually growing closer. He reminded me of a father I’d always dreamt of having as a child. And Ruby was always calling. Wanting to go shopping or wanting to come over with wine or wanting to take me out to dinner. It felt like I had become part of their family.
