“He may come back, but for now wants to go solo. To tell you the truth, Henri only worked for me for a month. Prior to my clinic, he worked as an assistant to the East Coast Warden. That is until the warden retired. He’s more of a free agent. Most unusual for an omega.”

“Until I fucked up his life.”

“Blame me. As the alpha, I should have been there to monitor your injection.”

Slade pulled out his wallet and took out a check. “I want to compensate him for the damage I did.” Lycans couldn’t have reconstructive surgery because of the shift. If Henri was rich, he might interest a mate. Even female omegas had standards.

“Not necessary, Prince Slade. You were not yourself.”

“Still. I wish I could remember what happened prior to my attack on Henri.”

“You were beside yourself and for whatever reason your wolf keeps that memory blank.”

“True.”

“If you wish, I can try hypnosis. Trust me, you will remain in control.”

On my back with my eyes closed? Not a chance. His wolf refused such susceptibility. “No. I just need to get busy. Do what I’ve been trained to do, combat.”

“Well done. I’ll return in two weeks to re-evaluate you, but in my opinion, you’re over the worse. I don’t see why you can’t acclimate to Team Greywolf life. I recommend you shift to wolf form once a day and go on runs with the betas. As a wolf, you might better remember details of your missing memory.” He stood and bowed. “Prince Slade.”

Slade, in wolf form swam back as Jesper and the betas waited for him at the lake’s shore. He stepped out and shook his fur. The cold water cooled his bad mood, since Cricket had not returned. She’d be back tomorrow. No need to worry. She was a few hours away at the king’s castle. How much trouble could she get into while under the king's protection? For one, she could choke again or decide killing another bear might feed her ego. She survived the change, maybe she was born under a lucky moon.

Damn it. He had come to terms with his new reality. His pack and kinsmen were dead. Nothing could bring them back. Dr. Warner agreed that his choice to honor his dead pack by serving the LIA was the best course of action. Although, he gently encouraged him to reconsider returning to the Yukon, with his future mate and rule his territory. Slade told him he’d revisit the idea in a year.

As the richest warrior, Slade would rather put his wealth to better use such as purchasing the latest in tech equipment and a new jet for the LIA. He put Jesper in charge of his holdings and gave him a substantial salary to do so. The gentle accountant and pack historian asked for Rylee’s permission and she agreed. Of course, she would. She looked forward to a newer jet.

Jesper lowered his body. “Prince Slade, do you wish to go on a hunt?”

The betas waited for his command.

“No. Let’s go back and you can return to selling some of my gold.”

“Yes, my liege.”

Slade dashed back to his guesthouse, but slow enough to allow the four betas and Jesper to keep up with him. He must convince Team Greywolf, he was well. The only residual symptoms of his illness appeared to be his nightmares and his fixation with the attractive runt. If only he could help Cricket on her current assignment. Damn. He missed his little wolf.

He took a quick cold shower. Thoughts of Cricket in that black little dress and without a stitch on went straight to his cock. How easy it would have been to join her when she showered while he was in her apartment. Sucking her delectable nipples, biting her round little ass, and tonguing her sweet clit until she howled his name.

His cock swelled to missile proportions, a heat-seeking missile looking for Base Cricket. Docking into her silo.

Slade snarled. No relief. Jesper was in the next room. Why should he give a fuck if the omega smelled his ejaculated semen? If he masturbated, Jesper may not understand. Alpha wolves always had women lined up to relieve their sexual tension. Pack members helped their alpha fulfill his needs. The last thing he wanted to hear from Jesper was how to hook up with a local she-werewolf. Not any woman, only Cricket would satisfy his itch.

He scrubbed shampoo onto his scalp. Anger replaced lust. She fucked human males. Not ever again. He turned the water off and stepped out into his companion’s office. “Get me a beer.”

Jesper looked up from his laptop. “Yes, my liege.”

“No formalities. Call me, Slade.” The only person he wanted to submit to him and treat him with proper respect was Cricket. On her hands and knees, her ass up. No, on her knees giving him head.

Jesper stood and lowered his head. “Yes, my…Slade.” He turned and headed toward the kitchen.

Slade dressed in blue jeans. No shirt and no shoes. Good enough. In case, he felt the need to shift. Going wolf might take his mind off Cricket. Or not. Damn, his wolf wanted her more than he did. Maybe he should have gone with Dr. Warner. Yet his need to protect Cricket overpowered the logical side of his mind. He sat on the sofa, facing the fireplace.

“Here you are, sir.” Jesper brought him a cold Belgian beer. “Do you want some venison?”

Slade grabbed the beer. “I can wait until dinner.” He drank and then glanced at Jesper. “Do you want one?”
