“Stop,” I ordered time, and it obeyed.

Tiredly, I rose and nearly slipped, but still, I found my way up. I was at my magic limit, the backlash for all these spells almost breaking me, but I didn’t care. I needed them all here, and they were here, the most powerful witches of Omeron Coven. I felt myself trembling as I bound them and as I cursed the cliff, which crumbled away, and the storms never to end.

I had to make sure none of them could ever feel free and safe to use their magic again.

Stumbling once more, I made my way out of the mirror, all but falling onto Simone’s floor. My vision was darkening, but I didn’t care. My body felt as though it was ripping apart, but I had to finish. Rising, I gripped the door and remembered what his home looked like, then pushed open the door with as much force as I could.

I stumbled into the beautiful library, breathing out heavily.

“Wraith,” I called, and the book appeared in my hands. “I will return. Until then, hide. Even from me, let me not sense you, or hear you, let none discover you.”

What must come, must come. What must be, must be. Nothing can stop fate, not even thee.

I ignored her voice and watched as it transformed into the old notebook I had written inside of. Then I flung it in the air so it could hide without me knowing exactly where. I couldn’t keep this a secret forever, but it didn’t need to be forever. Only long enough for all my coven to live, grow old, and die.

I stumbled out of the library. My last stop was the last place I had smiled and laughed with all of them. It felt like years later, but it was barely a day.

I glanced up at the waterfall, remembering how they sang to me.

“Always the sentimental one.”

I froze at that voice. It wasn’t possible. But as I trembled, wishing to wake up from this nightmare, I turned to see my uncle completely unscathed. Not even smoke from the flames stained his clothes.

“Do you know why we meet in the mirror?” he asked with a charming smile that was sickening. “It is my creation, allowing me to be there even when I am not there. One would call it a reflection, but it is much more than that. Even my magic works as if I were there.”

I shook my head, not wanting to believe it, but beside him now stood Magdalena, frowning up at him, even trying to kick him.

Even in death, she made me want to smile.

“It looks like you have had one long day.” He stepped closer, and I stepped back away from him. “I’m surprised you haven’t died already from how much magic you’ve used.”

“Coward,” I muttered. “You didn’t want to face me till the end.”

“The correct word is smart. When you are born without anything, you must be smarter to gain it—”

“Steal,” I sneered.

His eyes narrowed. “You have learned so much in such a short amount of time. Age’s worth of knowledge fell into your lap, and you use it to find out something so useless.”

“The truth is only useless to those who like to lie,” I replied calmly. I only had so much magic left that I could use, and I needed it for something more.

“I’ll keep that in mind. Now give me the book,” Axel demanded, his whip forming in his hand. “Or I will rip it from you. Like I ripped the magic out of your father—”

“You bastard!” I screamed, hurling

the fire from my hands, only it died out before it reached him.

“Foolish.” He laughed, sending the lightning toward me. I tried to stop time, but it didn’t work, so I braced for pain instead.

I felt a wind brush across my face.

“The only one who calls her foolish is me.” Theseus was in front of me, a small smile on his face even as the lightning hit his back. He grimaced only slightly and cupped my face. “For the record, I am highly pissed at you.”

“I-I—Watch out!” I yelled.

However, he had already taken me and was running through the treetops when, somehow, the lightning sent us hurtling toward the forest floor. Theseus wrapped his arm around me as we broke through the trees, landing on the dirt with a boom that echoed.

“This is a family matter that you are interrupting, beast.” My uncle…flew over to us.
