“I’m meant to be a healer.”
So, subtle wasn’t going to work. Rob pulled the comforter up and secured it around their bodies as she settled in and stared at the ceiling.
“I guess that’s why I was concerned about you last night,” she continued. “I want to help terminally ill patients on their road to recovery. I’ll do what I can to help, and then they’ll check out.”
“Check out? Do you mean die?”
“No. I mean check out. I want to work at the ashram in California. I’ve applied for a job there, and I’m just waiting to get an offer.”
“You’re leaving?” He didn’t know why that hurt.
“I never planned on staying.”
“That’s too bad.” He shouldn’t be giving her the wrong signals. “I mean, my sister and Amie seem to be fond of you. I’m sure they’ll miss you. Do they know?”
“Yes.”
He didn’t know what came over him, but he kissed her. He lifted her chin with his hand and covered her lips with his. The minty flavor of the toothpaste was still present on her tongue. And he smelled her, the essence of her pussy still on his fingers as he stroked her cheek gently.
She snuggled in closer, wrapping her leg around his hip. He felt the warmth of her center on his thigh. He wanted to fuck her. With everything he had, he wanted to fuck her senseless. But he couldn’t. Not only because they didn’t have protection but involving his dick would mean he’d have to explore the unspoken connection he felt toward her. For the first time he felt forever. That was not a good thing. She wanted sex. And she was leaving. He needed to keep his distance.
He slowed the kiss, then backed off. “I think I’m going to have a shower. The sun has been out for a while now.” He motioned to the tiny window. “I have some stuff I need to do today.”
“Yeah. Me too.” Her voice was cool and collected, but her face didn’t hide her disappointment. He knew this because it was probably the same look on his own face.
Despite the unexpected feelings that came out of nowhere, he had accomplished what he set out to do. To hook her. To plant the idea that maybe she could explore her sexuality with him. He wasn’t going to push her. Not now, but with her unexpected news of leaving the country he didn’t have as much time as he had anticipated.
He kissed her on the forehead and climbed out of the bed. He took one last look at her before he closed the door.
Chapter 7
Martina followed Rob up the basement stairs. They were greeted by bright sunlight as the door opened into the spacious kitchen.
Carrie stood at the sink rinsing out the glasses they had used the previous night. Martina saw the ring of blue caked on the bottom of each glass.
“Good morning, sleepy heads!” Carrie was way too chipper for the morning after a drinkfest. Then again, she didn’t drink as much.
“Hey, Care.”
“Hi, Carrie.” This was awkward. The last thing Martina wanted to do was alienate a friend. She needed as many as she could get. But if it came down to it, she wouldn’t regret her morning with Rob for a second. It was the most erotic, sexy, exciting, toe-curling time of her life.
“Did you two have a good sleep?”
“Yes, we did. Right, Martina?”
“Yes. Very good sleep. That bed is comfy.”
“Mmm.”
The look on Carrie’s face told Martina they weren’t kidding anyone.
“You guys don’t have to be all weird. I made the mistake of going downstairs when I saw your car in the driveway this morning.” Carrie directed her comment to Rob. “Let me tell you, being greeted by my brother’s naked ass first thing in the morning is not pleasant.”
“Oh God!” Martina blushed and hid her face with both hands.
“You, brother, are becoming more like Aleks every day. It’s not a good thing.”
“Get over yourself.”
