“Colter!” She cries and the damn dog begins howling in tune to her cries from its spot on the sofa.

“You’re going to get it anyways.” His voice is rough, almost angry and I can’t seem to break the hold he has on my eyes. “From the minute you turned seventeen you’ve been mine. Your parents knew it. Every boy who every tried to ask you out knew it too. I knew it. The only one who didn’t know, was you.”
“I don’t understand.” My heart is thundering in my ears as my brain processes his words.
“I waited for you for as long as I could Oaklynn, this, today, was the answer to every damn prayer I’ve been throwing at the universe since the day you turned eighteen. The only question left unanswered now is whether you can be happy in a small town with the Sheriff who has no plans of leaving.” His head tilts to the side to watch me as Marble flops onto the floor and crawls into my lap, watching me, as if she understands what we’re saying.
Slightly speechless, I brush my fingers through Marbles fur and swallow the lump forming in my throat.
“I’ve only ever wanted one thing in my life, Colter.”
“What’s that?”

“Woof!” Marble jumps into our lap, making sure her presence hasn’t been forgotten.
Scratching her ears, I lean forward, and she kisses my face. “And Marble, can’t forget her.” A flutter blossoms in my chest as she closes her eyes and leans into my touch, like she knew what I was saying.
Colter’s silence is unnerving, so I continue petting the puppy until his hand grasps my chin and lifts my face to meet his stare.
“I’ve searched almost my entire life for a woman like you Oaklynn.” His voice is husky.
