When Jacob spooned behind me, I fell fast asleep.
Chapter Five
Destiny
When I woke up the next morning, Jacob’s side of the bed was empty. I pulled my aching body up to read the note left on his pillow.
“I’m going to the Atlanta office for a few meetings and I’ll be back by noon. Then, we will talk…”
Since our looming conversation had been postponed for a few more hours, I decided to use this time to take the kids to Montie’s office. He would be pleasantly surprised to see them while we’re in town, especially after he missed Junior’s big win in Florida’s all-state championship. Jacob had pulled some strings to get him on the team as a walk-on, and the coach accepted him because Junior was competitive and had already been playing little league soccer in Atlanta. And well, it might have had something to do with Jacob’s generous donation to the team’s travel fund. No kid on that team would have to pay to travel for at least the next couple years.
I grabbed my cell and called Shalanda to see if I could somehow schedule a few hours of Montie’s time. When I told him about Junior’s game at the last minute, he blew up on me. He wouldn’t understand that this visit was impromptu for me, as well. He didn’t like surprises, so he would be ticked if we just showed up and he had important meetings scheduled at the same time. Thankfully, Shalanda saw a way to clear up half of Montie’s day without putting him at any inconvenience.
“I’ll just have his earlier meeting come in at 1 p.m. That should be no problem,” she said. “It’s a feedback followup anyway.”
“Are you sure he won’t be chewing the skin off my head and reattaching it to my skull after he’s gotten over his frustrations?” I asked, laughing slightly but serious as a heart attack. I didn’t not want any beef with Montie, which seemed to be all he was giving me as of late.
“No, Destiny. That won’t be a problem. He’ll be so happy to see Junior and Montana, and hell, I will too. So what if he gets pissy about the surprise of it all. Can’t wait to see my babies, and if you have any problem with Montie, tell him I okayed his schedule change weeks ago. Little white lies don’t hurt anybody,” she said and laughed.
“I don’t think it’ll come to that
, but thanks for covering for me anyway,” I laughed. “The kids are going to be so excited! Thank you so much. We’ll see you in a little while.”
Next, I called Lynetta.
“Good morning, Mrs. Turner. Is there anything I can do for you?” she asked in a perky voice.
“Good morning, Lynetta. Are the kids dressed? I’m about to take them to see their father, since Jacob won’t be coming back until noon.”
“Yes ma’am. What time would you like for us to meet you?” They were one floor down in a presidential suite.
“In thirty minutes, come up to the penthouse, but don’t give them breakfast. I’m surprising them and their father with a breakfast meeting. Also, don’t tell them where we’re going. It’s a surprise. Have the car come around and get us by 7:45. I should be ready by then.”
“Yes, ma’am,” she said and I disconnected the call.
I went into the bathroom and turned on the shower. I slipped out of the Jacob’s night robe and held my hand out to test the water. It was steaming hot, just how I liked it. I couldn’t wait to step in and just clear my head for a little while, at least. Just as one foot landed in the shower, my phone rang.
I picked up my phone off the bathroom counter and answered. “Hello.”
“Good morning, my beautiful wife,” Jacob’s deep, soothing voice resounded through my phone’s speaker.
I smiled. “Good morning, Jacob.”
“Are you going somewhere?”
Those security guys are such rats.
“Yes, and I know your security team already called to let you know I asked them to pull the car around. Is that why you’re calling?”
“Yes, they did call. Where to?”
“If you must know, Mr. Turner. I’m taking Junior and Montana to see their father.”
“Okay, that’s a good thing. And, yes, I must know where my wife is at all times. That’s why I pay people good money to make sure you’re safe. I also want to wish you a great day before I get caught up in the meeting I called with my team.”
“Oh, thanks Jacob. I hope everything is okay.”
“It is now that I have talked to you. As far as work, I just have to cover some ground with the Atlanta team since I’m here. Nothing to worry about, beautiful. Enjoy your morning, and I know the kids will enjoy visiting Montie. I’ll see you very soon. I still plan to be out of here by noon.”
