“What’s wrong?” I asked, and Chrissy held my hand tight.
“It’s Jasmine.”
“Have you heard from her?” Vic asked, and the urgency in his voice made my blood run cold.
“No. Not since... since she came to see us while we were trapped at the bungalow yesterday morning. Why? What happened?”
Vic shook his head and rose to his feet.
“Ah, sir, please don’t—” The nurse saw it was pointless trying to stop him as he approached me and placed a hand on my shoulder.
“She’s missing, Muriel. She was supposed to visit her parents last night, but she didn’t show up, and nobody’s seen her. It’s been turned over for us to investigate. I’m so sorry.”
My vision blurred. I vaguely heard Vic talking about getting me to answer some questions about ‘known associates’ and anyone who might have a problem with her being in town, but I couldn’t respond. Hugh’s strong hands held me in place, but my mind had gone in a million directions at once.
“We have to find her,” I blurted out finally.
Right now, nothing else mattered.
