“I can’t believe how hungry I am right now.”

“You missed dinner last night.”

Her gaze was still glaring. “Yeah, I know. You see, this guy nearly shot me.”

“He didn’t shoot you.”

“Yeah, but what if he had?” she asked.

Chains gritted his teeth. “No.”

“What do you mean, no?”

“I … can’t think about it.”

“You can’t think about the thought of someone shooting me?”

“I wouldn’t let it happen.”

“You weren’t there, Chains.” She picked up her bacon with her fingers. “Yum, you know the only way to make this better would be if it was completely smothered in maple syrup.”

He chuckled. “I’ll remember that for next time.”

“So … how would you have stopped him?” she asked.

Chains stared at her. He couldn’t bring himself to even think about that. “I’d have killed the bastard if he hurt you. The fact that he pointed a gun at you. No. I can’t do this.”

She licked her lips, and stared at him. “He didn’t shoot me.”

“And when I see him, I’m going to make sure he pays for threatening you.”

Neither of them spoke, and he stared at her. He couldn’t do this.

He watched as she picked up her fork. She began to eat her eggs, and he watched her. “I’m not dead.”

“No, you’re not.”

She ate another spoonful of eggs. “These are so tasty.”

He didn’t say anything and waited.

“The man … El something.”

“El Diablo.”

“Yes, when you see him again, I want be prepared,” she said.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“I don’t want to be a victim or risk being hurt like that again. I want to be able to take care of myself, and I know the only way to do that is with you.” She nibbled her lip and looked so cute.

“You want me to teach you about self-defense?”

“Yes. Maybe then I could stop you from drugging me again.”

“I did it for your own good.”

She snorted. “Right.”
