Bain gave her an assessing look then to her surprise he nodded. “Sorry. I’ll try to be more discreet.”
She moved over to Dominic. “Teach me your ways, oh wise one.”
Dominic grinned at her. “Just be firm with him. Show him where the boundaries are and stick to them. Much like dealing with a child.”
Bain turned and scowled at him. “You want waffles for breakfast or not?”
“I’m shutting up now.” Dominic grinned at her. “Bain’s waffles are the best and I can’t cook for shit.”
“How many waffles you want, angel?” Bain asked, grabbing some plates and setting them out. “Thought you might like waffles, seeing as you’re after a donkey sidekick.”
What did that mean? Then she clicked on and grinned. “And in the morning, I’m making waffles.”
Dominic groaned. “You two already have your own weird language going on, huh? Now I really feel like an awkward third wheel.”
“I’m sorry,” she said hastily. “I didn’t mean to make you feel like that.”
Dominic waved his hand with a smile. “I’m teasing. I’m glad the big fella finally pulled his head out of his ass and realized what a treasure you are.”
She blushed. “Wouldn’t be so sure of that.”
“It’s not a weird language. It’s from Shrek,” Bain informed him.
“Oh right, I’ve never seen it.”
“We’re going to have to rectify this situation,” she said to Bain.
He gave a nod. “Definitely. Tonight.”
Dominic groaned but smiled.
“Are there still reporters outside?” she asked.
Dominic’s face grew serious. “Yeah. A few. They’ll disappear a
fter a while if you refuse to talk to them. Probably be a good idea to stay in the apartment for a while.”
That she could do.
“How many waffles?” Bain asked.
“One, please.”
“You’ll have two.”
She sighed but didn’t argue as she sat beside Dominic. Bain disappeared into the butler’s pantry.
“You’re good for him,” Dominic told her quietly. “He’s always been intense. But it’s his way of showing he cares. Taking care of you. Just fight the big things, the things that are really important to you and let him have the small victories. He’ll calm down.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. Maybe. Eventually.”
Right. That sounded hopeful.
Bain came back out and plated them up some waffles. Dominic ate quickly and left.
“Is he all right?” she asked Bain.
