His nose nuzzled against mine. “Then there’s only one thing to do.”

“What’s that?”

His eyes found mine. “Show me where we’re headed, gorgeous.”

“Come on, Dani. You were the one who picked out this place.”

I watched her toes grip the edge of the pool. “I didn’t know you wouldn't let me go back to get my bathing suit.”

“Like you said, your roommate’s there. Did you really want to endure her questioning?”

“I would’ve, if it meant not skinny dipping.”

I held my arms out. “I’m not skinny dipping.”

“You’re only in your boxers.”

“And that means I’m not naked now, doesn’t it?”

Dani kept looking around. As if this would be the one time a throng of students walked in to randomly take a swim at nine o’clock at night. There wasn’t a soul around. After Benji ruined this place for her, I’d already had it in my mind to replace that memory with a much better one.

“I don’t like it when people keep me waiting, Bambi.”

She stuck her tongue out at me. “Too bad. You’ll just have to wait until I’m comfortable.”

I chuckled. “Women’s underwear is designed just like swimsuits. Their purpose is the only thing that differs.”

She paused. “That’s… not a bad point.”

“See? I have a good point every once in a while.”

She grinned. “You have plenty of good points when you’re not neglecting your health.”

I saw her eyes drop to my ribs and I splashed her.

“Uh, uh, uh. You told me you wouldn’t stare.”

She sighed. “It’s hard not to. Are you sure you’re feeling okay for something like this?”

A shiver worked its way up my spine. “Better than ever, gorgeous. Now jump in or I’m coming up there to get you.”

She pointed at me. “You better not.”

I shrugged. “Then get your ass in here. Otherwise, I’m coming for you. And I’m throwing you into this pool with all of your clothes on.”

“That would ruin my coat!”

“Then take it off and get in here.”

She was the cutest thing in the world when she was flustered. It was too easy to press her buttons as well. Dani was easy to rile up. Part of that idea made me sad. It made me wonder what her parents were really like. Because being easy to rile up usually came with a lack of self-confidence and a lack of understanding of the world.

In some ways, her parents had done her a disservice.

“Five,” I said.
