“No,” I growl and they both look at me.
“I can take care of myself. You get me a call when I get there, I’ll call my club in to take my back. I want Jasmine to get our daughter home safe.”
“Luke—”
“No arguments, Red. Daisy and you are the important ones here.”
“But I don’t want to go without you, Daddy!” Daisy cries.
“Daddy will be back soon. You got to be a big girl and go home with Jasmine, okay?”
“Okay,” she sniffles, clearly worried. I pick her up in my arms and close my eyes as her arms wrap around me, hugging me close. I kiss the side of her face and hand her into Jasmine’s waiting arms.
“Be safe,” I warn Jasmine, giving her a quick kiss. She nods, clearly not happy.
“You have a club too?” Mike asks, his gaze dropping down to my cut. I don’t answer because I figure he knows that answer now. “Well shit. Lagger is biting off more than he can chew,” he mutters, and the man doesn’t know the half of it. I was merely kicking around the idea earlier, but when Lagger hit Jasmine, he signed his death warrant. I’m going to take great pleasure in killing the son of a bitch.
And I’m going to make it painful.45Jasmine“Dad, I need you,” I murmur quietly into my cell. My gaze moves into the rearview mirror to look at Daisy who is playing on her tablet. Until today, I had no idea she could even unhook the latch on her car seat. It might be time to invest in a better version.
“Jasmine? Honey, are you okay?” Dad asks, immediately concerned.
“Jacob? What’s wrong with my girl?” I hear Mom asking in the background.
“Dad, it’s Dewayne. He stopped us, starting crap. He hit me and Luke kind of snapped.”
“He hit you?” Dad’s voice is deadly, chilling and cold. I knew his reaction before I even called him and I know Luke told me to get home, but I can’t do that. I don’t know who there will listen to Dewayne and I can’t Luke get hurt because of me. Still, this is just one of the reasons I never truly told my father anything about Dewayne and what happened.
“Mike showed up and kept him from killing Luke. Dewayne had pulled a gun, but Dad, I’m worried. They’re taking Luke into the station.”
I’m whispering the words, not wanting Daisy to hear them.
“I’ll call Dragon and we’ll get down there, Jazz,” he says, and I swallow down the small amount of regret I feel. I can only imagine how difficult it is for Dad to be in a police station. He doesn’t realize I know his past and I’d never tell him, but it hurts me just the same.
“Thanks, Dad. Could you…Can Mom come too? I’d like for her to get Daisy and take care of her while we deal with everything. I want to give my statement and get photographs of where Dewayne hit me. It might help, Luke.”
“It won’t be necessary, but I’ll make sure she’s there to get Daisy, baby.”
“Thanks, Dad.”
“I’ve failed you haven’t I, Princess?” Dad asks, using my childhood nickname that I haven’t heard in years.
“No, Daddy. Life just got hard.”
“That it did, baby. That it did. Where are you at?”
“Just coming back into town, out by the house on the hill that I always liked, the one that was on television.”
“Okay, sweetheart. See you soon. Be safe,” he says and I think I can almost hear the smile in his voice.
When I was little, I wanted to see the famous house that had an elevator in it. Dad drove up to it and paid the owners to let me take my own tour. I remember feeling like my daddy could do anything in that moment and in some ways, that feeling never left. That’s the main reason I called him, despite what Luke asked. This is Kentucky and not Virginia. If anyone can help with this mess, it’s my dad and his club.
Luke will just have to understand.46Dancer“Jesus H. Christ, what the fuck did I do to piss off karma that landed half of the Savage MC Crew and the Devil’s Blaze in my office?” Police Chief Garner growls, storming into his office.
His very crowded office—because he’s right. The tiny room has me, Hawk, Dragon, Dom, Thomas and Bull standing behind Jasmine, who is sitting in the chair in front of me. Beside us is Skull, Torch and B.B. Gabby is also here, sitting beside Jasmine and holding her hand, claiming she was here for moral support.
“Your dipshit officer hit my daughter and then arrested my future son-in-law,” I snap. Jasmine reaches up and grabs my hand holding onto it tightly. I look down at it and this feeling of warmth hits me. Her hand has grown, but this is exactly what she would do when she was scared and made me come into her room to get rid of any of the trolls that were hiding under her bed. I used to tell her a bedtime story ages ago that I mostly made up to make my Care Bear smile. Jasmine loved it though and made me tell it to her every night. I was kind of proud until she began to think she had mean trolls hiding under her bed every night.
