“I think we can safely say that we are completely secure with one another. Shall we toast our new affair with a glass of wine?”

“By all means, let’s seal this deal and get on with the fireworks,” she laughed.

They both laughed and sat down to enjoy a glass of wine together before slipping beneath the sheets and making love so softly that Autumn felt like she might break into tears at any moment. There wasn’t a woman in the world luckier than her. Malcolm was still the same beautiful man that had once picked her up out of a ditch. He might have fewer muscles, more gray hair, and considerably wrinkled skin, but so did she, and just like it had always been, they were perfectly suited for one another.

They drifted off to sleep in one another’s arms, just as content as they had been as newlyweds and even before that. It would still be years later, when they were much older and incredibly frail, when one of their newly engaged grandsons would ask what the secret was to a happy marriage.

Malcolm looked at her and then over at Autumn with a gentle smile and spoke to him quietly, delivering what he felt was the soundest advice a man could ever give.

“Marry a woman that kinda scares the hell out of you and you’ll never have another dull day in your life.”
